Beauty from tragedy. This bookmark was handmade from an old-growth fir tree that died in the Lytton fire; the tree’s bark and branches were burned, but the heartwood was untouched.
The tree lived and died near Ed Roest’s home in Lytton’s Botanie Valley. Ed brought the wood to Abe Kingston, who planed and cut the bookmarks; then I sanded them (hands covered in sawdust) and polished them with organic olive oil and local beeswax. In other words, they were made by me and two local friends, all survivors of the fire.
The grain on each bookmark is unique, and there are some natural imperfections, because this was once a living, thriving tree. When this supply is gone, there will be no more.
